Tacos in Mexico City

Coming to Mexico and not eating tacos would be an unforgivable sin. So when you visit Mexico City,  you will of course want to go to all the “best” taco places in the city. But I want to invite you to explore not only the taquerias, but also the types of tacos you eat.

Be Aware! So there’s about a taco stand on every corner and they are pretty cheap. But be careful and use your best judgment because you may think your stomach can handle the spicy, meaty, greasy tacos- but you will end up getting sick. Not necessarily from the street tacos or the place, but it is normal to want to eat everything you see and your body may need to adjust.

Not all tacos are created equal. Note that there are pricy tacos and that doesn’t necessarily mean they are good. There will be popular franchises like “El Ticoncito, El Califa, or Taquearte”, which are ok, but don’t underestimate the local taquerias- those are the true taco gems.

.Try something different! In the US, beef, pork and chicken tacos are common, but I dare you to try other meats: Cabeza, Maciza, Tripa, Suadero, Chicharon, etc. My personal favorite is tripa- (bien dorada) and the almighty Al Pastor taco.

There is a place in the Del Valle neighborhood called “Alay Alay.” They have Middle-eastern inspired tacos (falafel, hummus, baby ganus etc.). It is a must!

Must visit:  In the Centro, go to “Los Cocuyos”, it is this small hole in the wall with amazing tacos. It is a popular late-night spot and there will be a line. There’s no tables, chairs, bathroom, it’s a taco stand, but well-worth the wait. Another tiny spot is “Tacos El Moran”, located in the San Miguel Chapultepec area. They run out pretty fast so try to go in the afternoon and not at night. In La Roma, go to “Tacos Alvaro Obregon” for authentic Mexican tacos. That street is full of taquerias and most expats go to “Orinoco” (overrated), but “Tacos Alvaro Obregon” is a better option. And in La Condesa, “Maestro Taquero” is a popular new spot that is worth it. They give you a complimentary beer, great menu in drinks and food and you’ll find other items like burritos, tortas, etc.

If you’re in the upscale Polanco area, go to “La Casa del Pastor”; great service, fair prices and the best is pastor negro.

Any foodies out there, please share your taco spots. I will continue to do my research and find the best tacos in CDMX. Stay Tuned!
